In honor of World Smile Day (it’s Friday, October 7th) and the fact that “Happy” is our middle name, it’s the perfect time to delve into the science behind happiness!
So, what is happiness, exactly?
Happiness is a feeling, a positive emotion, a state of mind… The term is every bit as broad as it is subjective. Happiness looks different to every person. For example, what brings joy and happiness to one person isn’t always the case for another. The good news is once you understand happiness, there are ways to increase it!
Happiness is so important it’s considered a human right and is even in the Declaration of Independence! It’s included in our unalienable Rights which are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness! The “pursuit” is worth mentioning because it’s a continuous action—and not your end goal or final destination.
Why be happy? Aside from feeling good, happiness lends to:
- Higher productivity
- Healthier behaviors
- More resiliency
- Lowers stress
- Reduced pain
- Increased longevity
Happy Hormones, Happy you!
So what’s the science behind promoting positive feelings like happiness and pleasure? Happy hormones of course!
Happy hormones are created in different glands throughout the body that act as messengers. According to Healthline, here are happy hormones that act as messengers in the body.
- Dopamine. AKA, “the feel-good” hormone. It is part of the reward system within your brain and helps regulate motivation.
- Serotonin. This hormone helps oversee sleep, learning, memory, and more. It’s associated with feelings of happiness and helps to regulate mood.
- Oxytocin. AKA, the “love hormone.” It’s responsible for bonding in relationships as well as between mom and baby. It also helps promote trust and empathy.
- Endorphins. You can think of these as natural pain relievers. They carry messages across your nervous system to alleviate pain and promote pleasure.
Together, these Happy Hormones help to regulate your mood.
