February is National Heart Health month! Heart Disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. In fact, according to the CDC, it takes a life every 34 seconds. While the statistics are alarming, there are things you can do to help lower your risk. It’s never too early to take preventative measures which could mean the difference between life and death.

Know Your Risks.

Knowing your family history is a start, as is identifying conditions such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and diabetes that can increase your risk for heart disease or stroke. Through medications or lifestyle changes your health professional can work with you on ways to lower your risks.

Did you know even conditions like sleep apnea can contribute to heart disease if not treated properly? Per the AHA, this condition, which causes breaks in breathing, affects one in five adults.

Eat Right.

It’s not only about limiting foods high in saturated and trans fats. To optimally fuel your body, you’ll want to load up on fruits, veggies, fiber-rich grains, nuts, legumes, and seeds. The American Heart Association recommends eating oily at least fish twice a day and limiting your consumption of red meats.

Stay Active.

Are you getting enough exercise each week? In addition to strength training,  the AHA recommends that adults get one of the following:

  • 150 minutes of moderate exercise
  • 75 minutes of higher-intensity activity
  • a mix of moderate and vigorous activity

Furthermore, even light activity can help offset some risks associated with being sedentary, like sitting at a desk all day.

Feel like your get-up-and-go, has got up and left? One of the great things about adding regular activity to your day is having more energy.

Manage your weight.

Feel like each year you’re putting on a little (or a lot) of extra pounds? The more weight your gain, the harder your heart has to work which increases your risk for high blood pressure and more.

Did you know our XanthoMax® Happy Caps are more than just a happy pill? They’re also a healthy pill and a preventive pill, all in one great supplement. In addition to helping boost your mood and energy, they are also designed to support weight loss!

Manage Your Stress.

You’ve heard it before, but it bears repeating. Prolonged stress is bad for your health! According to the American Heart Association, “negative psychological health / mental health is associated with an increased risk of heart disease and stroke.”

Some ways you can manage stress are by meditating, making time for friends and family, exercising, finding a hobby and of course, a good night’s sleep.
